General Music Program

The general music program at Symonds is based on the belief that the arts benefit students across the academic and social emotional spectrum. Through music and creative expression students develop a greater understanding of their place in the world. Our program helps to develop an appreciation and understanding of global music, to provide experiences that otherwise might not be available and to help each child acquire skills towards literacy and musicianship.

Through song, movement, games, and instrumental expression, students have opportunities to develop self-confidence, social interaction and cooperation, responsibility, and leadership. They find an outlet to express, to perform, and to create. We work to enable children to enjoy and appreciate music and the arts for the rest of their lives.

Many songs that we learn and sing at Symonds were written within the building and/or composed by
our music teacher, Peter Siegel.

These songs, among others, play an important role in the success of our weekly All School Assemblies. Other works provide a window to the greater world. At Symonds, we love music and sing every day!

Strings

Beginning in grade 3, students have the opportunity to learn orchestral stringed instruments, violin or cello. This program continues through the grades with small group lessons and ensembles. Lessons are free of charge, however, there is a rental fee for students who do not own the instrument they wish to play.

Band

Band instruments are taught in grades 4 – 5, continuing into middle and high school. Instruments are taught in small groups, and there is opportunity for evening band practice and performances. Lessons are free of charge, however, there is a rental fee for students who do not own the instrument they wish to play.
