Intervention Services-MARS - Math & Reading Support

Intervention Services is a program which provides supplemental help in reading and math. This program is available for Symonds School students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The students are referred by their classroom teacher. Standardized tests given in the fall, winter, and spring help determine eligibility. Children identified as needing intervention support receive extra help in reading and/ or math from a trained Instructional Paraprofessional who works closely with the reading  specialist. The instruction may take place in the classroom or in the MARS room; either in small groups or one-on-one. Progress monitoring occurs every four to six weeks to assess the results of the intervention.

Parent support is an extremely important part of a child’s education. Students in K-3 receiving reading intervention are given a ‘Book in a Bag’ to take home daily. This is a great opportunity for families to take part in their child’s learning. The story should be read and discussed together, giving the student a chance to both practice and also share what they are learning in school. Kindergarten parents should read the book to their student. Newsletters are also sent home from time to time informing families of ways to promote and encourage learning at home.
