Grade 5
The fifth grade is a year that the students have an opportunity to develop many skills needed for the increasing academic emphasis in the upper grades. Skills that we focus on are organizational and study skills, leadership, critical thinking skills, time management, and the planning and completion of long-term projects.
Guided reading, literature circles, read alouds, and Daily 3 are the basis for reading instruction in fifth grade. The focus of reading is reading to learn, becoming familiar with a variety of variety of fiction and nonfiction genres, self-selected reading, skill and vocabulary instruction, and reading to gather information in different content and topic study areas.
In writing, fifth graders focus on building skills in the following areas: spelling, punctuation, grammar, creating complex sentences, and writing essays. Throughout the year we practice writing multi-paragraph pieces in the following areas: narrative writing, informational writing, and persuasive writing.
The core math program is Eureka Math. Our year is broken up into 6 modules: Place Value and Decimal Fractions, Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals, Adding and Subtracting Fractions, Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimal Fractions, Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area, and Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane. Problem-solving strategies, computation skills, fractions, decimals, number concepts, measurement, and geometry are some of the topics reviewed or introduced in fifth grade.
The major science units in fifth grade are animals and ecosystems, weather, and matter. Students have the opportunity to build terrariums and aquariums and get involved in a variety of hands-on experiments in class.
Social Studies units focus on world geography and the five themes of geography: location, place, region, movement, and human/environment interaction. We explore the five regions of the United States and learn more about the fifty states. Fifth graders also investigate the documents used in the establishment of the American government.
Leadership is a major focus and theme of our social/emotional work throughout the year. We partner with High 5 Adventure Learning and embrace their motto “Connect, Empower, Lead...Be the Example.” We have 25 to 30 hours of program experiences with High 5 through monthly classroom sessions with their program facilitators and two challenge course experiences. Our High 5 time focuses on sharing leadership roles, collaborative problem solving and exploring ways we communicate with each other. We also focus on identifying emotions and building relationships with others.
Homework assignments are used to reinforce and enrich learning experiences, teach organization of time, and help students accept responsibility for their work. As part of their homework, we ask students to choice read each night for 20 to 30 minutes.
